Trump Criticizes Bishop’s Sermon at National Prayer Service

Following the National Prayer Service held at Washington National Cathedral on January 21, 2025, President Donald Trump expressed strong disapproval of the sermon delivered by Episcopal Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde. During the service, Bishop Budde urged the President to “have mercy” on marginalized groups, including LGBTQ+ individuals and immigrants. She highlighted the fears these communities face, stating, “Have mercy on those who are afraid now.”

In response, President Trump took to Truth Social, labeling Bishop Budde as a “Radical Left hard line Trump hater” and describing her sermon as “nasty” and “ungracious.” He criticized the inclusion of political themes in what he believed should have been a unifying religious service. Additionally, Trump found the service “very boring and uninspiring,” and demanded an apology from Bishop Budde and her church.

Bishop Budde, who has previously voiced opposition to President Trump’s policies, intended her sermon to promote compassion and unity. She emphasized the importance of showing mercy to those living in fear due to policy changes, particularly within the LGBTQ+ and immigrant communities.

The exchange underscores the ongoing tension between the Trump administration and certain religious leaders advocating for social justice and inclusivity. It also highlights the broader national debate on the intersection of politics and religion, especially concerning the treatment of marginalized groups.
